  • What is a maternity TENS machine?

Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) is a professionally researched, tried and tested method of pain management in childbirth and chronic pain used in European hospitals and clinics since the 1960's.

Labour TENS unit is an advanced, small, battery powered device which sends a pulsed electrical stimulus via pads to the skin.

Why use a maternity TENS machine ?

    • No harm to baby
    • Drug free pain control
    • Instant long lasting pain relief
    • No side effects or drowsiness
    • Fully controllable with boost button
    • Used at home when contractions start
    • Can be used with other methods /drugs
    • Safe and easy to use at home or in hospital
    • Proven up to 90% effective for reducing labour pain
    • Non invasive giving freedom to move and walk about
  • How does TENS work ?
    • Releases natural pain killers (endorphins and encephalins)
    • Blocks out pain messages to the brain.
    • Provides a sense of control over labour pain and gives an alternative focus
  • What does TENS feel like ?
    • A pleasant tingling sensation on the skin where the pads are placed.
  • When do I start using the TENS machine?
    • We recommend you start using the maternity TENS machine at home at the onset of contractions. Early use of the TENS promotes the bodies production of endorphins and encephalins - the bodies natural pain killers.
  • How long should the maternity TENS be used ?
    • The Tens machine can be used as needed for as long as desired but a minimum 60 minute duration is recommended for childbirth.
  • Can I practice with the TENS machine ?
    • Yes, we recommend you try out the TENS machine beforehand so that you are familiar with the operation. You may place the pads on your lower back as you would during labour or you may place them on the inside of your forearm to test. If you are earlier than 37 weeks then only use the tens electrode pads on your arm & limit the test to a short period. The pads are self adhesive and re-usable. Re-apply the plastic film to the sticky side of the pads when finished and store in the plastic bag.
  • Is TENS safe?
    • Yes, our TENS is specifically designed for Labour. It has been professionally researched, tried and tested since the 1960's. However there are a few precautions. Do not use over broken or desensitised skin. Do not use before 37 weeks unless approved by your doctor. Do not use if you have a pacemaker. Seek advice from doctor if you have epilepsy.
  • I would like a water birth - can I use maternity TENS ?
    • Yes, although NOT whilst in the water. Use during the first stage of labour which may take several hours. The midwife will not usually ask you to enter the water after you are 5cm dilated. You need to REMOVE the TENS machine BEFORE you enter the water.
  • Can I use the maternity Tens machine with other pain relief methods ?
    • Yes, you may continue using  the TENS machine with other methods such as pethidine and gas and air.
  • Can I use the TENS machine after the birth ?
    • Yes, the TENS machine is very effective for reducing the pain of uterine contractions after birth. The TENS can also be used whilst breast feeding after birth, and can be used with leg, neck or back pain.
  • Can I use an ordinary TENS machine ?
    • It is not recommended as ordinary TENS machines will be less effective. A maternity TENS uses larger pads and has specially designed programmes with a boost button for changing between the programmes to allow an increase in pain relief during contractions, these do not exist on a standard tens unit.
  • When is the best time to order ?
    • Order as soon as possible to secure your maternity TENS machine. It will be posted out to you 3 weeks prior to your baby’s due date, priority hire is sent same working day. You can order 6 months in advance of your baby’s due date
  • What if I am due in less than 3 weeks ?
    • We recommend you select special delivery at the checkout stage
    •
  • Can I take the TENS into hospital with me ?
    • Yes. The midwives and doctors are usually very happy for women to use a maternity TENS. Check with your midwife or doctor if you are unsure. You may need to turn the TENS off temporarily whilst using electronic monitoring equipment.
  • What if my baby is late ?
    • You automatically get an extra week free, any longer needed, email us as soon as possible and we can normally give you another extension for one week.
  • Can I use a maternity TENS to treat back pain during pregnancy ?
    • Yes, our maternity TENS can be used to treat back pain during and after pregnancy. (not before week 37)

    would highly reccomend
I started early labour on 2nd jan 6am I visited triage to be told i had only dialted 2 cm so was sent home as it is more comfortable. As the contractions were coming 3in10 mins i used tens for 14 hours at home and took it with me to hosp & used it up until i was ready for water birth. I had my baby boy at 9am on 3/1 this tens helped me so much. i would reccoment this tens machine to anyone who wants a natural birth as you can control the booster button when the pain gets worse.

Delivered 2 babies with only this tens as pain relief
I have two children, three years apart. The first labour went rather fast, we were in hospital for about 40 minutes when he came,I had no time for other pain relief, but felt it was bearable. I especially liked the boost feature during contractions. With the second I had to search online to find the same model of machine as I wanted that boost feature again. Once again it was all I had need of. I also found the tens helped with after pains. This machine is well worth the cost of hire!

I was very pleased that i hired this TENS machine
I was very pleased that i hired this TENS machine and used it most of the time while i was in labour. It definitely helped relieve the pain and pressure; i just used that along with the gas and air. I also used it after the birth because i was very bruised due to forceps delivery and one of my muscles down below felt quite tight and painful, so i used the TENS machine with the pads one on each buttock and used it while sitting and feeding baby, it really helped. Overall a very worthwhile purchase. Thanks.

This was great in the early stages of my labour
This was great in the early stages of my labour and allowed me to stay at home for longer. I think more than anything it acts as a distraction from the contractions. You can turn the power up as they get stronger. I was having contractions for 36 hours and so ended up having other pain relief too but was able to use this along side the gas and air once I got to the hospital. It's definitely worth it and I would highly recommend. Arrives quickly and is easy to return.

    Highly recommend
Thank God I hired this! It made a huge difference in labour to my lower back pain and just to feel more relaxed. We had a home birth so pain relief was limited buy I got on fine with just my tens. The boost button was brilliant too. Highly recommend

    Excellent
I received my TENS machine in plenty of time and found it useful in labour. I was pleased that the machine was so easy to package up to send back with the pre-printed label as with a new baby the last thing you need to be thinking about is a trip to stand in a queue at the post office! I recommended your service to several friends and I know 3 who have also hired machines from you and they all had the same great service and found their machines very useful for pain relief.
